Capital project, CAPEX, creates new capacity or significantly increases existing capacity; it is recorded as a fixed asset and is capitalizable; typical example, construction of a new factory or a new data center; main focus, growth, expansion, and new business / Sustaining capital project, SUSCAP, maintains existing capacity without creating new capacity; it is also recorded as a fixed asset and is capitalizable; a typical example is the replacement of critical equipment at the end of its life to maintain operation; main focus: operational continuity, asset integrity, and regulatory compliance / Operational project or OPEX does not structurally change capacity; it is recorded as an expense for the period; a typical example is routine preventive maintenance or minor corrections; main focus: daily operational efficiency and current operation. I work with three main pillars in my Alexander Osterwalder Business Model Canvas project | Security (Personal/Operational/Asset) and Big Data (Data Science/Data Strategy/Data Integration).
